What a free shift is

A free shift is an unassigned shift that your eligible employees see in Shyfter Staff and can take. It is ideal for last-minute replacements, occasional reinforcements, or to offer hours to whoever wants to take them.

Go to Settings ⚙️ → Free shifts → Settings.

Available options

  • Enable the Shifts Market: with the Shifts Market, several employees can apply for the same free shift, and you then choose who the shift goes to. If the option is disabled, booking works in "first come, first served" mode: the first person to take the shift gets it.
  • Count headcount, including free shifts: in the orange information bar shown above the shifts, you see the number of people scheduled. By enabling this option, free shifts are also counted in this headcount calculation, which reflects the target headcount even when not all positions are yet assigned.
  • Group identical free shifts: if the option is enabled, several identical free shifts created at once stay grouped into a single block that shows how many shifts it contains. If it is disabled, these shifts are displayed one after another.

Don't forget to save.

The Shifts Market mode in practice

When the Shifts Market is enabled, the flow is as follows: you publish the free shift, eligible employees apply from Shyfter Staff, then you assign the shift to the candidate of your choice. This keeps you in control of the assignment according to your own criteria (seniority, fairness, availability), instead of an automatic assignment to the first person who books.
