Time clock geolocation
Record an employee's GPS position at the moment they clock in, flag out-of-zone clockings, and understand what accuracy depends on.
Geolocation associates a GPS position with each clocking made from the Shyfter Staff mobile app. It helps you make sure a clocking was indeed made from the expected workplace, which is especially useful for teams who move across several sites.
Enable geolocation
Geolocation is enabled in Settings ⚙️ → Time clock → Shyfter Staff, via the option Enable GPS geolocation when clocking. Once enabled, Shyfter records the employee's GPS position at each clocking, break or scan action made via the app. This requires the user to have granted location permission to the app on their smartphone: without this permission, the position cannot be recorded.
Flag clockings outside the perimeter
You can go further and automatically highlight clockings made too far from the establishment. In Settings ⚙️ → Time clock → Settings, enable Show an icon if a clocking is made outside the company perimeter. A Clocking outside the allowed range (in km) field then appears: it defines the radius, in kilometres around the department's location, beyond which a clocking is marked with an icon in the timesheets report. This location remains indicative and is not 100% accurate.
What accuracy depends on
Location relies on the technologies of the employee's phone, not on equipment specific to Shyfter. Its accuracy therefore varies with the quality of the GPS signal (worse indoors or in dense areas), the support of the mobile network and Wi-Fi, and the phone's location settings. Small inaccuracies are normal and do not necessarily indicate an anomaly.
Good to know
Inform your teams about the use of geolocation and the purpose of this measure. Make sure location permission is granted to the app, otherwise the position will not be recorded even if the option is enabled on the account side.
